The Hendler Residence

A remodel & enhancement of an existing 2-story single-family residence originally built in 1968. The structure was originally designed by Frank Hendler for his family. Frank Hendler was Oscar’s former employer and mentor.

The intent of the remodel work was to enhance and modernize the existing cedar paneling and post and beam detailing without destroying the charming original design and intentions.

The remodel work included developing a new entry approach which involved adding a new balcony to an existing second floor office, enhancing the living room, and remodeling the existing kitchen and bathrooms. The work included adding a very subtle Norwegian influence with the addition of notched wood posts at strategic locations. The existing tall warped wood French doors were replaced throughout with new anodized dark bronze slimline commercial French doors.

The new aluminum windows and doors are credited with helping to save this all-wood structure from being destroyed during the 1993 Malibu firestorm. A similar, neighboring Frank Hendler designed all wood structure was tragically destroyed in the 1993 firestorm.
